Dear Hoyas in Shanghai,
We’re publishing a letter we received from Georgetown University about Father Thomas King, S.J.

Dear Georgetown alumni club presidents,

We are writing to regretfully inform you of the passing of Father Thomas King, S.J. For those who wish to pass this information on to your constituencies, you will find more information below regarding his passing.

Father King passed away suddenly of a heart attack in his room on Tuesday, June 23rd. A native of Pittsburgh, he is survived by his brother, Fr. William King, also of the Jesuit community at Georgetown, and by his sisters, Mrs. Martha Cox of Pittsburgh, PA and Mrs. Catherine Marie Tovey of Portland, OR.

Fr. King taught theology at Georgetown for over forty years and published widely on theological and spiritual topics. He was deeply interested in the thought of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the famous Jesuit paleontologist, and in the connections between religion and science. He was famous on campus for the impact of his “Problem of God” class and for his remarkable, late evening liturgies. http://alumni.georgetown.edu/default.aspx?page=NewsEventsFatherKing20090622.

A campus-wide memorial Mass celebrating Fr. King will be held in September after the return of students and faculty. More information about this will be available at a later date.
